RAVELSTON,
EDINBURGH
BACKGROUND
The
client, a successful Edinburgh businessman, acquired the
ground floor of a subdivided late Victorian villa in 1998.
Having redeveloped the interior, he now wanted to improve
the garden comprising a "billiard table" lawn
bordered by shrubs, separated from the communal drive by
a dilapidated woven fence (see before photographs)
Leading
a very busy lifestyle the client basically wanted an "outdoor
room", appealing to the senses and easy to maintain,
where he could relax.
In
order to give me a feel of the garden he wanted, the client
showed me photographs taken from magazines and books. He
was particularly interested in a circular entrance arch
and gate and the dramatic use of water.
Non
verbal information was gleaned from the way the client decorated
the house. Though filled with some unashamedly modern elements
the interior is very sympathetic to the character of the
house in what could loosely be described as a 'Bold Romantic
style". It was thus my intention to extend this feeling
into the garden.
